Restaurants and bars in towns in Bahia may seem very different to the ones you are used to back home.
Kilo restaurants sell all types of food and the plate is weighed everytime you serve yourself, while self-service has a fixed price and you can eat as much as you want. If you eat little, the kilo option is cheaper.
Fast food and turnover bars sell hamburgers and pastel, fried half-moon shaped pastry filled with chicken, cheese, meat, shrimp, etc. They are very tasty and worth a try. Some of these bars (called lanchonetes) also serve breakfast (coffee and bread) and other pastries.
Snack bars usually sell sea-food, fried fish sticks, crab, etc. but they also sell portions (french fries, etc.), and function as ordinary bars serving beer, etc.
Steak houses are actually normal restaurants that serve barbequed meat.
Typical bahian food restaurants mainly sell moqueca, a bahian dish with dendë oil, coconut milk, coriander and fish or shellfish of your choice. If you are not used to dende oil, ask them to use only a little. These restaurants also serve meat, chicken and other fish dishes.
